Two people had to be saved from a 4x4 when its wheels became stuck in quicksand as the tide advanced half a mile from the shore on Brean beach.
Rescuers tried to free the ageing Range Rover but the tide came in too quickly and they were forced to abandon it.
The £5,000 vehicle was swamped by the tide but its owners were unhurt.
Coastguards have warned drivers to avoid Somerset's treacherous sands. Four days ago another car was pulled to safety from the sands on Burnham beach.
Burnham-on-Sea Coastguard spokesman Mark Newman said: "This is a stark reminder about the dangers of the mud that lurk along Somerset's coastline. The mud here is treacherous and has claimed lives."
