Honours for Somerset's citizens

Marcus Trescothick captained England in Pakistan
Cricketer Marcus Trescothick, who helped England to their first Ashes win in 20 years, has been appointed MBE in the New Year Honours list.

The batsman, who celebrated his 30th birthday on Christmas Day, said: "It's not something you expect to happen to you just for playing cricket."

He was among a host of Somerset citizens honoured for their work.

Lord Ashdown was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and Saint George.

Community work

The former leader of the Liberal Democrats and MP for Yeovil until 2001 was recognised for his work as the High Representative of the International Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Becoming CBEs are Peter Hendy, from Bath, for services to public transport and the community in London through his work for Transport for London, and Miles Wickstead of Norton-sub-Hamdon, for his work at the Department for International Development.

Christopher Austin, the chairman of the West Somerset Railway Company is made OBE as is Charles Dennis of Ilminster, for services to the Staffordshire Pottery Industry.

Patricia Comer, from Burnham-on-Sea, is made an MBE for her work with the St John Ambulance Brigade, and Robert Hoddell, JP gets the same award for his services to the administration of justice in Avon and Somerset.

Henry Murray, a hotelier from Bath is appointed MBE for services to the hospitality industry.

Janice Ross, from Dulverton, is made an MBE for her work with the community there and across Exmoor, and Peggy Wotton, from Wellington, is granted the same honour for services to the rural communities of Strawley, Greenham and Ashbrittle.
