Police said the baby was "fit and well"
Police have traced the mother of a baby girl found abandoned in a garage in Yeovil, Somerset.

The girl - named as Angel by nurses at Yeovil District Hospital - was discovered by a member of the public.

She had been found, naked and only a few hours old, near Bucklers Mead Road at about 1700 GMT on Friday.

Avon and Somerset Police, who had earlier urged the woman to come forward, said the mother had been found "safe and well".

"Officers have been conducting extensive enquiries since the baby girl was found," a police spokeswoman said.

"As a result of those enquiries, the girl's mother has been found safe and well.

"Police and the relevant agencies and organisations will now be making sure that both mother and baby get all the expert attention and assistance they need," she said.

'Good condition'

Superintendent Olivia Pinkney, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: "Baby Angel is a lovely little girl, she's fit and well.

"She was 7lb and 15oz, so a very healthy weight. She is a beautiful little thing.

"I am very concerned for her mother. This will have been a very difficult day for her. It will have been difficult physically and I'm concerned about her emotional state."

Dr Paul Heaton, the consultant paediatrician looking after the baby, said the girl was in good health.

He said: "She was a little bit cold, but otherwise seemingly in good condition. She was found very quickly after her birth."
