Lynx crashes during Gulf exercise

An investigation is under way after a Royal Navy helicopter crashed into the sea while on exercises in the Gulf.

The three crew members of the Mark 8 Lynx helicopter from 815 squadron at RNAS Yeovilton, Somerset, survived the crash and were rescued by helicopter.

The Lynx is currently deployed to HMS Nottingham, part of the Marstrike Task Group in The Gulf.

The crash happened at 0400 GMT on Thursday, 0800 local time, around 120 miles east of Oman.

A spokeswoman from RNAS Yeovilton said: "The Lynx has sunk to the bottom of the sea and an investigation is ongoing.

"The crew were picked up by helicopter and taken back to HMS Invincible."
