The council says the footpath has to close to vehicles for safety reasons
A public footpath in Somerset used as a rat-run by vehicles is to have bollards installed at both ends.

The move follows complaints from pedestrians and a survey by the council which found that about 3,000 vehicles were driving on the footpath each day.

The route between Quantock Terrace and The Leggar, in Bridgwater will also have warning signs installed.

A council spokesman said there were plans to upgrade the 'Leggar Link' so it could be used safely by vehicles.

"Somerset County Council have acknowledged the need for a road link here in the recent Bridgwater Transport Strategy Review and this will be included in future plans," he said.

"We can no longer ignore the problem of cars and lorries which use this narrow footpath as we are liable for the safety of the pedestrians."
