Approval for skate park

Skaters this week voted in favour of the Morlands plans
Skaters in Glastonbury are to get their own skate park on the former Morlands Tannery site.

Plans to open the skate park this summer were delayed in June when concerns were raised over the upgrade of an existing Orange phone mast located off Beckery Old Road.

But, following an independent survey on the potential health risks of the mast, the South West Regional Development Agency (RDA) has announced that work would begin on the park.

After being given the health survey last month, Glastonbury-based skate group Urban Surfers voted to go ahead with the Morlands plans.

The skate park will be part of the regeneration of Morlands
David Rees from the RDA's Somerset team said: "I'm delighted that the Urban Surfers have voted to go ahead with plans to build a skate park.

"It is vital that these young people have a safe place to go."

Mark Holden, Somerset County Council's Area Youth Coordinator, said: "It is quite clear that the skaters in Glastonbury want us to get on with constructing the skate park as soon as possible.

"This was the last hurdle and we are confident that it will become a reality in the new year."
