Melanie inquiry 'may be fruitless'
Melanie Hall
Miss Hall disappeared after a night out in Bath

Detectives admit a high-profile investigation into the disappearance of Bath hospital worker Melanie Hall may come to nothing.

Searches at sites in and around Bath throughout March failed to produce vital clues and detectives admit they have had no response to an appeal for a key witness to come forward.

The two-week search at fields in Inglesbatch near the city uncovered a number of objects. They were sent for laboratory testing but nothing has been found to link them to the case.

Two Bath men who were arrested in connection with the reopened investigation are due to answer bail later this month. Police will then have to decide whether to charge them or release them without charge.

Melanie, from Bradford Leigh, near Bradford on Avon, went missing from Cadillac's nightclub in the centre of Bath in June 1996.

It was thought a mystery woman seen drinking in the Lamb and Lion pub in Bath could have held vital information to her disappearance.

But all efforts to trace her proved fruitless.
