River Severn flood alert remains

A flood warning is still in place on the River Severn in Shrewsbury after heavy rain across the region.

Several minor roads in the north of the county were shut after the Severn and the Vyrnwy burst their banks.

The warning is for the Severn in Shrewsbury but an earlier warning for the Vyrnwy at Melverley and Kinnerley has been lifted.

Frankwell Main and Frankwell Riverside car parks in Shrewsbury remain closed to vehicles.

The council has said four roads were closed - Chilton Farm Lane, near Atcham; the road between Cross Houses and Atcham; Gravel Hill Lane near the West Mid Showground in Shrewsbury and Sydney Avenue in Shrewsbury.

Roads in the Melverley and Masesbrook area have also closed.

River search

On Thursday, several cars became stuck in flood water and a milk tanker driver had to be towed out of the water by a fire crew.

A farmer, Ray Morris, helped fire crews by using his tractor to get another man to safety from his vehicle in the Melverley area.

A police helicopter was used to search the River Severn after an upturned canoe was spotted in Shrewsbury leading to fears that someone was in the water.

However, police later said they had been contacted by a man whose canoe had been swept away from moorings at the bottom of his garden in Coton Hill.

He had not yet collected the canoe but was believed to be the likely owner and the river search was called off, a police spokesman said.
