Costly bus services may be axed

Council chiefs have revealed plans to axe five of their most expensive bus services across Shropshire.

Shropshire Council said too few people were using some services to make it worth the high prices they were paying in subsidies.

It said that one, the 0720 GMT from Telford to Bridgnorth, was costing the council £16.38 per passenger.

The council has urged anyone who uses the affected services regularly to contact it with their comments.

Other services being looked at are the 1755 GMT on Saturdays from Newport to Shrewsbury, which costs the council £9.73 per passenger and the 71a Oswestry to Four Crosses Saturday service which costs £5.58 a passenger.

The 323 Telford to Market Drayton service, which runs from Monday to Friday, is also being looked at after the council worked out it cost it £13.83 for each passenger, and the 221 Whitchurch to Market Drayton Friday-only service which costs the council the same per passenger.
