County's high sheriff announced

The new high sheriff of Shropshire has been announced.

Hugh Trevor-Jones, from Oldbury near Bridgnorth, has been appointed to the post and will take up the position in March next year.

Mr Trevor-Jones, who is chairman of a Black Country-based lockmaking firm, will be expected to help the chief constable and attend royal visits.

The position, which is largely ceremonial, dates back to Saxon times and is unpaid.

A sheriff needs to own property in the county for which he or she is nominated.

Mr Trevor-Jones will be formally selected by the Queen next March.
