Bag thief beaten off with brolly

A 70-year-old woman fought off a would-be attacker with her umbrella while her husband hit him with his walking stick in Shropshire.

The couple were walking along a street in Trench, Telford, when a man tried to steal the woman's handbag.

After the couple turned on him, the man ran off towards Furnace Lane.

The attack took place during the morning of Thursday, 5 November. Police said the couple were brave in the way they fought the man off.

Det Con Colin Bell said he was pleased to report neither of the pair was injured.

"However, it is fair to say both of them are quite shaken by their ordeal," he said.
