Some of the ponies may be permanently disabled, police said

Five Shetland ponies, one of them a foal, have been attacked and seriously injured by a dog. The four mares and the foal, which is 23in (58cm) tall, were in a field on the outskirts of Oswestry, in Shropshire, when they were attacked. Some of the ponies were so badly injured they may suffer permanent disabilities, police said. It is thought the ponies were attacked over the weekend and police are appealing for information. Bite wounds Owner Amanda Woof, of West Felton, said the foal had a badly damaged eye but was expected to recover. One of the mares has bite wounds on her legs while another was bitten on her back and face and could be left blind. She added the foal's mother had bite marks on her neck and leg and could be left lame. A vet confirmed the bite marks had been caused by a dog.
