Anniversary of officer's murder

Det Con Stephen Oake

The father of a police officer killed restraining a terror suspect six years ago has said the family will not be dwelling on his death.

Det Con Stephen Oake, 40, was stabbed to death at a house in Crumpsall, Manchester, in January 2003.

He was recently awarded a Queen's Gallantry Medal.

His father Robin, from Shrewsbury, a former Isle of Man Chief Constable, said the family think of him each year on 14 January, but "look forward".

He said: "We're not sort of downhearted or in any sense looking backwards. We thank God for Steve.

"This Queen's Gallantry Medal is a nice accolade, but one has to remember of course he wasn't the only one there. I think I speak for the family that he will have accepted that on behalf of the team."

Det Con Oake was repeatedly stabbed by Kamel Bourgass as he held on to the terror suspect during the operation to stop him escaping.

Bourgass, an Algerian national, was sentenced to life in prison on 29 June 2004 for the murder of Mr Oake and the attempted murder of three other Greater Manchester Police officers.
