Historic river ferry may be sold

Ferries have been making the crossing there for 400 years

The operator of a historic ferry across the River Severn has said he is considering selling it in the hope someone else can get it running again.

The Hampton Loade Ferry, near Bridgnorth, Shropshire, has been out of action since flooding affected the area 18 months ago and damaged the boat.

Operator Darren Page said he would be meeting community leaders to discuss the issue this week.

Ferries have been making the crossing there for more than 400 years.

The foot ferry, which is attached to a cable across the river, has no power but uses the current of the water to pull it across to the opposite bank.

David Browning, who runs the nearby River And Rail pub, said it would be a huge boost for the area if the ferry started running again.

However, he said he was sceptical over whether anyone would take on the responsibility.
