Gritters rushed out as snow hits

Road-gritting vehicles were sent out at short notice in the early hours on Monday in north Shropshire after snow swept in from the north.

The county council said snow in the Woore and Market Drayton areas had not been expected.

Roads were gritted on Sunday, but with light rain or sleet showers forecast, more gritting was not expected until an inspection overnight, a spokesman said.

All main roads have been treated in the north east of the county.

"In the early hours it emerged the roads in the Whitchurch area were treacherous," the spokesman added.

"There was a band of snow from Cheshire which just skirted the north of Shropshire."
