Praise for town green campaigners

An environment group has welcomed news that former railway land will be registered as a town green following a planning battle.

The Open Spaces Society praised campaigners in Oswestry, Shropshire, who it said had preserved the five-acre site for future generations.

Shropshire County Council agreed to the proposal earlier this week.

Its decision followed a public inquiry where a government inspector ruled the land could be registered as a green.

The land had been used by the public for more than 20 years, but it was bought a few years ago and plans included building a health centre on the site.
