Accused 'hoped men would survive'

Sukhdev Singh
Sukhdev Singh's trial was adjourned until Tuesday

A man accused of beating two people to death at a fish and chip shop told a court he hoped they would survive.

Sukhdev Singh denies murdering Jaswant Singh Bajwa, 30, and Kulwant Singh Dodar, 31, whose bodies were found in Shawbury, Shropshire, in December.

Mr Singh, 27, from Drayton Road, Shawbury, said it looked as though the men were unconscious and he told police he would leave them until the morning.

He claimed he was attacked sexually by the men.

Mr Singh said in evidence at Stafford Crown Court that prior to the attack he had never laid a finger on them.

He said in the early hours both men came into his bedroom to wake him up.

Mr Singh said they pulled the duvet off his bed and then Kulwant Singh pulled his pyjama bottoms off and tried to have sex with him.

He said he was thinking what to do to stop them and he fell down by the side of the bed and grabbed a hammer but he did not intend to kill them.

The trial was adjourned until Tuesday.
