No more homes, says council chief

New house
Regional planners have also criticised the recommendations

The leader of Telford and Wrekin Council has warned against recommendations for 10,000 extra homes in Shropshire.

The government already wants 26,500 homes built in Telford by 2026. But government advisors said Telford could handle approximately 40% more.

Council leader Andrew Eade said such a drastic increase would "swamp" the town's infrastructure.

The proposals will be examined at a public meeting in December.

'No more'

Mr Eade said the increase was the equivalent of building a new community the size of Wellington.

It is one of three proposals suggested by independent consultants Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners and will inform the government's regional planning strategy.

The scale of increase has been criticised by The West Midlands Regional Assembly planning authority of 38 local councils.

But The Government Office for the West Midlands said households were growing faster than current supply and pushing up house prices.
