Flood barriers have remained in Shrewsbury as flood warnings were still in place in Shropshire on Monday evening following heavy rain.

The Environment Agency kept a warning for the River Severn in the town, but the borough council earlier said its water levels had already dropped.

A family have praised a farmer for rescuing them on his tractor from their home in Hughley, near Much Wenlock.

Richard Griffiths took the Heywoods, who climbed onto the roof, to safety.

Emergency repairs

Kirk and Lucy Heywood were at home during Friday's downpours with Sophie, 10, and four-year-old Guy, when the nearby Hughley Brook burst it banks and four feet of water swept into their home.

Mrs Heywood, who said Mr Griffiths was putting himself in danger to attempt to rescue them, said being taken out of the floods in a tractor was a "new experience (for) all of us".

"The phones had gone down, the power was down," she said.

"It was showing up the stairs and you start thinking if this gets to the ceiling and it's over halfway what do we do?

"It was worth shouting, because obviously it's always nice to see a friendly face."

Flood warnings remained on Monday evening on the Severn at Shrewsbury and from Buildwas to Coalport including Ironbridge.

Brockton primary school near Much Wenlock and Shrewsbury's Sundorne secondary school have been closed.

Earlier on Monday Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council officer, Doug Hosking, said the River Severn at Shrewsbury peaked at 3.38m (11.1ft) early in the day and dropped to 3.35m (10.9ft) when tested at 0545 BST.

Shrewsbury's main Frankwell and St Julian's Friars car parks, which were closed on Sunday, have reopened.

Emergency repairs were being carried out at Onibury level crossing after it was struck by lightning on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the weather, the county's fire and rescue service said it had a relatively quiet weekend and was not called out to many flooding emergencies.
