A public memorial service is to be held for a policeman who was shot dead while attending a domestic incident.

Pc Ricky Gray, 43, was killed after being called to Castlefields, in Shrewsbury, during the early hours of 6 May, 2007.

The suspected gunman, Peter Medlicott, was also found dead at the house.

The service, for Pc Gray's family, friends and colleagues, at the town's St Chad's church on 7 September will also be open to the public.

It will be followed by the dedication of a sandstone memorial to Pc Gray in the Quarry Dingle by his wife Jenny Lee and West Mercia Police Chief Constable Paul West.

'Exceptionally kind'

Mrs Gray said she wanted the service to be open to the public after being touched by people's support for the family since her husband's death.

She said: "Everyone has been exceptionally kind to me. I have had so many messages of support for which I am most grateful.

"They mean a great deal. All who wish to attend St Chad's for Ricky's memorial service will be most welcome."

The service, intended to celebrate Pc Gray's life, is scheduled to begin at 1600 BST.
