A man has died after he was hit by a police van in Shropshire.

The man has not been named but is believed to have been in his 20s and from the Whitchurch area.

He died at the scene after he was struck by a marked West Mercia Police Vauxhall Vivaro van on the A41 near the Tilstock roundabout in the early hours.

A woman with him and the two officers in the van were unhurt. The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Road closed

Police have appealed for witnesses who saw the man and woman walking near the Tilstock roundabout before the incident.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: "We are anxious to hear from anyone who saw the collision or the circumstances leading up to it."

The van was travelling towards the Tilstock roundabout when the fatal crash happened. The road was closed for several hours.

A post-mortem examination and formal identification will be held next week.
