Free range eggs in every school

Free range hens
The free-range hens that lay for Shropshire's schools

All eggs used to prepare meals in Shropshire's schools are now free-range.

The County Council has stopped buying intensively reared eggs after requests from parents.

Criticism of treatment of battery hens, led by celebrity chefs Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, has been given high-profile media coverage.

The eggs, which are locally sourced, will also be served in the county council's care homes and restaurants.
