Flood barriers up as Severn rises

Flood defences are being put up in Ironbridge as river levels continue to rise in Shropshire.

The barrier at the wharfage started to go up at about 0800 GMT on Thursday, ahead of a peak which is expected at about 2200 GMT.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for the River Severn from Buildwas to Coalport and a warning also remains in place for Shrewsbury.

Frankwell car park, in Shrewsbury, will reopen on Friday with limited spaces.

The higher tier of the flood defence there was also put up on Thursday.

Spokesman Dave Throup said the river level at Frankwell would not drop below 3m (9.8ft) for several days.

Businesses along the riverside in Ironbridge said they remained open as normal.

The Atcham to Cross Houses road was shut on Thursday after a car broke down in flood water.

More rain is forecast for Shropshire over the weekend and heavy rain on the Welsh Highlands affects river levels in the county.
