BT's national network centre in Oswestry, Shropshire, took 212,000 calls during the BBC's Children in Need broadcast on Friday.

The annual charity appeal is on course to raise a record £19m.

The centre said there was a peak in calls during the features on Doctor Who and Junior Dragons' Den.

BT spokeswoman Emma Tennant said: "The Joseph star Lee Mead, and the bands Westlife and the Spice Girls, also generated lots of calls."
