A county town has won two top awards for its flowers, parks and gardens.

Shrewsbury has taken the International Champions award in Communities in Bloom, a competition run in Canada.

On Friday, it was announced the town had won a gold award in the Entente Florale competition - a prestigious event for European towns and cities.

Judith Williams, portfolio holder for public amenities on Shrewsbury Council, said it meant the town was the best and it was all very exciting.

She said: "We have it all in Shrewsbury, we have a wonderful quality of life.

"We have entertainments, arts, culture, cleaner streets, architectural merits and floral merits in a big pot - it just means we are simply the best."
