People living near to where a policeman was shot dead are being invited to a public meeting to discuss the incident.

Pc Richard Gray was shot when he responded to reports of domestic violence at a house in Shrewsbury on Sunday. He later died in hospital.

Peter Medlicott, thought to be the gunman, was found dead with a wound to his head.

Alan Mosley, chairman of Thursday evening's meeting, said he hopes the community finds a way to move forward.

He said it is important for people from Castlefields and Ditherington to come together and express their feelings about the events.

Book of condolence

Shropshire's Police Commander Supt Guy Rutter will also talk to residents and introduce a new local policing team.

The meeting is being held at Martin Wilson School at 1900 BST.

It has emerged that Mr Medlicott, a pest controller who worked for a construction firm, had been arrested on suspicion of assault a month earlier.

An online tribute and book of condolence to Pc Gray has been set up on West Mercia Police's website.

The force said it has already received hundreds of messages including some from as far away as Australia and America.

Assistant Chief Constable Peter Wright, who is leading the investigation into the deaths, said the messages had been a comfort to Pc Gray's friends and colleagues over the past few days.

They will eventually be passed onto his wife and family.
