The prime minister has paid tribute to a policeman who was shot dead while attending a domestic disturbance.

Pc Richard Gray, 43, a former soldier from Dundee, was shot dead at the scene in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, on Sunday.

He had been commended five times for bravery including recognition for his part in the arrests of two armed men.

Speaking at the beginning of Prime Minster's Questions in the House of Commons, Tony Blair offered his sympathies to the officer's family.

"I'm sure the House would also wish to send our condolences and sympathy to the family and friends of Pc Richard Gray who was tragically shot on Sunday, our thoughts and prayers are with his family," he said.

'Firearms-trained'

Gunman Peter Medlicott is believed to have shot Pc Gray with a legally-held .222 calibre rifle he used for pest control work, before turning the weapon on himself.

An inquest heard identification evidence of both men on Tuesday and was adjourned.

Married Pc Gray, known as Ricky, was a firearms-trained police officer who was called to help after unarmed officers were held at gunpoint.

A post-mortem examination revealed both men died from single gunshot wounds to the head.

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the shooting.
