Candidate admits far right past
George Ashcroft
George Ashcroft said he was "deeply ashamed"
A Conservative candidate running in the local elections has admitted that he is the former Midlands regional organiser for the National Front.

George Ashcroft, 30, who is standing in the Brookside ward in Telford & Wrekin, left the far right group in 1998 and says he is "deeply ashamed".

The Telford and Wrekin Tory leader Andrew Eade told the BBC Politics Show that Mr Ashcroft should go.

The Conservative Party said it was investigating the matter.

Mr Ashcroft is currently a Conservative member of Madeley Parish Council and has been a party member for five years.
