Campaigners want to restore the castle to its former glory
A medieval castle is to receive almost £50,000 towards its restoration.

Hopton Castle, near Ludlow in Shropshire, dates back to the 12th Century but has fallen into disrepair.

During the English Civil War 30 of Oliver Cromwell's supporters were massacred by Royalists who then set about destroying the castle.

It has been placed on English Heritage's Building at Risk list and £46,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund will go towards making the castle safe.

It is hoped the Hopton Castle Preservation Society will receive a further £800,000 for restoration work and eventually open to visitors.
