Three signal boxes in Shropshire are to be replaced with electronically controlled lights in a multi-million pound project.
It is hoped that trains on the line between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton will be able to travel faster.
The system that will replace the signal boxes at Lightmoor, Cosford and Codsall will be situated Madeley junction, between two larger train stations.
Shrewsbury has the largest lever- operated signal box in the UK.
It is hoped that with the new, modern signalling system will increase the speed of passenger trains from 75mph (120km/h) to 90mph (145km/h).
