Green residents win charity cash
Five charities are the first to benefit from a scheme offering residents the chance to donate £1,000 just for recycling their household waste.

Shropshire County Council's Recycle for Charity should see six households win the amount for a favourite cause.

People who put out a kerbside recycling box or recycling bin on collection day could be picked as a random winner.

Joy Blizzard, county waste initiatives officer, said: "What a great incentive to get into the recycling habit."

Potential £2,000

The money for October was donated by residents to: Shropshire Wildlife Trust, the Dogs' Trust at Roden, Hope House Children's Respite Hospice, Shropshire and Mid Wales Head and Neck charity and the Haematology Unit at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

But the randomly-chosen household in Bridgnorth district failed to put out their recycling for collection in October.

That means the prize money rolls over, and a Bridgnorth area resident using the scheme in November is set to win £2,000 for a deserving cause.

The scheme is funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and run with the district and borough councils and BBC Radio Shropshire, which will announce the results each month.
