Brother and sister saved from sea
A brother and sister from Shropshire who got into difficulties off the coast of Cumbria have been saved despite their father failing to reach them.

Coastguards and a lifeboat were called when the 12-year-old boy and girl, 14, of Market Drayton, got into trouble at St Bees on Thursday.

Their father went into the water to try to rescue them while their mother watched the incident from the beach.

He could not reach them but lifeboat crews managed to save them.

The pair were taken to hospital in Whitehaven for a check-up.

There is an ongoing campaign for lifeguards at St Bees, after the death of a 10-year-old boy last summer.

Wayne Adams died and his 11-year-old brother was injured after they became stranded near rocks in strong winds at St Bees.

The mile-long sandy beach at St Bees is situated three miles from Whitehaven and is popular with families.
