Man in court over Murrell murder
Hilda Murrell
Hilda Murrell was stabbed but died from hypothermia
A builder's labourer has appeared in court accused of the murder of elderly peace campaigner Hilda Murrell nearly 20 years ago.

Andrew George, 36, of Meadow Farm Drive, Shrewsbury, is alleged to have killed the 79-year-old in March 1984.

Miss Murrell's body was found with stab wounds in a copse six miles from her Shrewsbury home.

Mr George was remanded in custody by Judge John Shand at Stafford Crown Court on Monday.

He was ordered to reappear for another directions hearing on a date before December.

Miss Murrell, a well-known local peace activist and rose grower, was stabbed five times but died from hypothermia.

Mr George was 16 at the time of her death.
