Residents and motorists in the Oxfordshire village of Newbridge are being asked their opinions on a proposed new bridge for the area. The current bridge dates from the 13th Century and is classed as an ancient monument but has been closed to heavy vehicles since 2006. Now Oxfordshire County Council is proposing a new structure just 247 metres (270 yards) from the original. Residents will have until Christmas Eve to have their say on the proposals. It is almost 760 years since the Newbridge stone crossing was built. It currently carries the A415 Abingdon to Witney Road across the Thames River. Public Exhibition In 2006, an 18-tonne weight limit was imposed, resulting in heavy vehicles seeking alternative routes through towns and villages further along the river. The proposed bridge would be capable of carrying all classes of heavy goods vehicle. A public exhibition will be held at the Rose Revived public house next to the Newbridge crossing from 26 to 28 November. Rodney Rose, Oxfordshire County Council's cabinet member for transport implementation, said: "We would value people's comments and I urge people from the area and those who use the A415 to attend, see what is proposed and have their say."
