Night training is part of the crews' training routine

An RAF Merlin helicopter was damaged after a hard landing on a training exercise at El Centro Naval Air Facility, California. The incident took place during a night flying exercise on 9 November, three of the crew sustained minor injuries. The Merlin, from RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, was taking part in pre-deployment training for operations in Afghanistan. An inquiry into the cause of the incident is underway. The four-month exercise in California is designed to train crews for the "hot and high" conditions and constant threats they will face on a daily basis. As well as acclimatising to the conditions they will face in Helmand, the crew are learning to use new kit they will need during the conflict. The news of the incident comes on the day RAF Benson confirmed the first Merlin helicopter had arrived in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence said the incident would not delay more helicopters being sent to Afghanistan over the next few weeks. The Merlin Helicopter Force is expected to provide a significant increase in the helicopter lift capability available to commanders.
