Food fire in flat sparks rescue

A man had to be rescued from his flat in Oxfordshire after fire broke out in the kitchen.

Crews were called to Wolvercote at about 0730 BST after a neighbour alerted them.

Firefighters had to force their way into the flat where they found a 22-year-old man, who was led to safety.

The fire started in the kitchen and was caused by cooking being left unattended, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

A spokeswoman said: "It was only the fact that the flat had a working smoke alarm and the vigilance of the neighbour that averted a disaster."
