OBE for black rhino charity vet

John Gripper

An Oxfordshire vet who has dedicated more than 20 years of his life to black rhino conservation is appointed OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

John Gripper, 79, set up the Sebakwe Black Rhino Trust in 1989 which works to preserve the species in Zimbabwe.

He is one of five people in Oxfordshire to be appointed OBE.

Clothes designer Jeff Banks, who lives in Henley, becomes a CBE for his services to fashion while three Oxford University professors are knighted.

Mr Gripper, who lives in Ascott-under-Wychwood, described his honour as a "total surprise".

The vet has been living in Oxfordshire since 1955.

He had a practice in Chipping Norton and worked for the Cotswold Wildlife Park from 1972 to 1987.

He said: "It's good that they recognise the work of charities instead of only awarding celebrities."

Fashion designer Mr Banks said his award had been "a long time coming" but was still a "surprise" and a "shock".

Starting in 1964 with the Clobber brand, his was among the first British ranges to be exhibited in Paris.

"As a background, I know how hard life can be, you know what you need to do to excel in something. I guess it is part of my fabric," he added.

Others recognised included Professor Ian Brownlie, for services to public international law, Professor David Hendry, for services to social science and Professor Christopher Ricks, for services to scholarship - all professors were knighted.

Wendy Rose, vice-chairman of Homestart UK, is to become an OBE for services to children and families.

Rosalind Hall has been appointed MBE for voluntary service to the RAF and Dependants' Disabled Holiday Trust.

Dr Mohga Kamal-Yanni also becomes an MBE for services to Oxfam.
