'Fake spy' to pay 10 to victim

A man who masqueraded as an MI5 agent to trick his ex-girlfriend out her £14,000 savings has been ordered by a judge to pay back £10.

Wayne Gouveia, 25, of Bicester, Oxfordshire, convinced Leanne McCarthy, 21, he was trying to save her life.

Gouveia of Shannon Road, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to fraud charges in March.

The judge at Oxford Crown Court has ruled that Gouveia could not afford to pay back the full amount.

Ms McCarthy said afterwards she was a step away from bankruptcy and was "disgusted" with the judge's ruling.

She said: "I was totally speechless, shocked, I just felt sick."

She added: "It's not my debt, it's his and in my eyes he's getting away with it scot-free."

Shop assistant Gouveia began a relationship with Ms McCarthy in 2007.

He bought expensive gifts for her before concocting a series of lies and claiming to be an MI5 agent.

He convinced Ms McCarthy her boss was trying to poison her with anthrax.

He also got her to sign a fake version of the Official Secrets Act and stole her bank account details and Pin numbers.
