Man injured in explosion on canal

A man suffered minor burns when a camping stove exploded onboard a canal boat at Wolvercote, near Oxford.

The man had just changed the gas cylinder on the stove and it ignited when he tried to light it.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue service said the man and his partner and child, who were also on the house boat at the time, were badly shaken.

"The man had superficial burns on his hands, legs and torso," said the incident commander, Paul Molloy.

"But he should make a full recovery."

Mr Molloy said the injured man had thrown the burning stove off the boat to stop the fire spreading, so it was out when the fire crews arrived.

"It just goes to show that you can't be too careful when handling gas cylinders." he added.

The man was treated at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
