Some of Oxfordshire's biggest businesses and hundreds of schools have marked the 90th anniversary of Armistice Day.

Workers at the BMW plant, County Hall staff and railway stations observed the two-minute silence at 1100 GMT.

War veteran William Stone, who lived in Oxfordshire for 20 years, also laid a wreath on behalf of the Royal Navy at a ceremony at London's Cenotaph.

Mr Stone, 108, is one of four surviving British veterans from World War I.

"I shall never forget it. I was one of the lucky ones and I'm thankful for that," he said.

"Of course they should be remembered. If it wasn't for them [those who died] we wouldn't be here."

The silence marks the moment - at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month - when the Armistice Treaty was signed by the Allies and Germany to end four years of conflict.
