Schoolgirl killed in coach crash

A 17-year-old girl was killed when the bike she was riding was hit by a school bus in Oxfordshire.

The bus, operated by Tappins Coaches, was taking pupils to Abingdon School when the crash happened in Colwell Drive, Abingdon, on Monday morning.

The teenage victim was a student at Larkmead School, in Faringdon Road.

The driver of the coach is said to be suffering from shock and the pupils on the coach at the time of the collision have been offered counselling.

It appeared the girl was crossing the road on her bike when the accident happened, police said.

Insp Paul Winks, of Thames Valley Police, added: "A detailed forensic examination is being carried out by officers. It's important they collate all the information to find out exactly what happened."

The coach company described the crash as "a tragic accident".

Colwell Drive was closed in both directions while officers examined the scene.

The road has now been reopened.
