Plans for city's 20mph road zones

Plans for a 20mph speed limit on most of Oxford's roads are being put out to public consultation.

The move would cover every road in the city apart from major arterial routes, the county council said.

If the proposals get the go-ahead the new limit could be brought into force next year. The county council will now ask the public for their views.

There are already a number of 20mph zones in the city and these would be incorporated into the project.

Councillor Ian Hudspeth, Oxfordshire council's cabinet member for transport, warned people not to get "carried away".

He said: "While this is very exciting and radical, it is still a proposal. We will be consulting.

"We need to get this right from all of the practical angles and from having listened to local people."
