One candidate in council election
A parish council election in Oxfordshire will go ahead despite only one candidate standing.

Candidate Emma Philcox is standing alone for a seat on the Shenington with Alkerton Parish Council after rival Nick De Silva decided to pull out.

Cherwell District council was unable to cancel this Thursday's election because Mr De Silva's withdrawal was after the required deadline for candidatures.

About 800 will be spent staging the poll, which will include a final count.

Ballots printed

In a statement, a spokesman for Cherwell District Council, the election administrator, said: "The election will still go ahead as the candidate didn't withdraw the candidature by the required deadline.

"Therefore we have no powers to accept any changes after the published date for last day with withdrawals of candidature."

Ballot papers have been printed with both original candidates' names on them and the polls will be open on 13 March.
