County waste incinerator planned
A waste incinerator is to be built in part of Oxfordshire.

Oxfordshire County Council said it would help it to conform with a law coming into effect in 2010 to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

It said after a tendering process incineration proved to be the best waste disposal option.

The proposed location will be announced in 2008 and the scheme will go through the normal planning process, allowing objections to be raised.

Oxfordshire County Council had been tendering for companies to provide a waste disposal solution and those shortlisted have all proposed incineration.

The council said it would also aim to increase the amount of waste it recycled - from the current 40% to 55% in the long term.

It said that the best countries in Europe currently recycled between 50% and 60%.
