Safe drivers get electronic smile
Road sign
Two signs have been bought to ease residents' concerns
Electronic signs that flash a smile to drivers who obey the speed limit are to be used on the roadside after residents said they were worried about speeding.

Two speed indicator devices have been bought by community safety bosses for use in west Oxfordshire.

The West Oxfordshire Community Safety Partnership purchased the signs after a survey revealed that speeding was the biggest concern of residents.

More than 1,400 people responded to the survey on community safety priorities.

'Significant investment'

The two devices have already been used by neighbourhood police teams in Chipping Norton, Brize Norton and Carterton.

Next month they will be taken out to Woodstock and Eynsham.

Ady Comber, of the Bampton, Carterton and Burford Neighbourhood Action Team, said: "The neighbourhood action group is pleased that progress is being made on this issue - this is a significant investment in a community priority.

"Educating people as well as enforcement is vital if we are to reduce the speed vehicles travel through our communities."
