A woman from Turkmenistan has sold all her possessions and has brought her six-year-old daughter to the UK so she can undergo specialist surgery.

Gulshat Kadyrova, who was born without hip sockets and has a curved spine, was unable to get the correct treatment in her own country.

Her mother Bahar was forced to sell everything and come to Oxford in attempt get help for her daughter.

But she still needs to raise more money to pay for the £30,000 treatment.

Ms Kadyrova said: "While I was still in Turkmenistan I had to rely on the help of friends and relatives to cover the cost of medical treatment that we had there.

"When we knew we would have to leave the country go and find help somewhere else it was completely outside my financial ability to do that.

"I sold all the valuable things in our house, the television, the refrigerator, my jewellery that my mother had passed on to me as heirlooms."

Ms Kadyrova earns the equivalent of £40 a month as an accountant in Turkmenistan.

Specialists at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre have agreed to carry out the operation, but the family needs to raise more money for the treatment.

Amy Schondelmeyer, who became a friend of the family while working as a linguist in Russia, helped organise the journey to the UK.

She is now helping Bahar raise money and supporting them during their stay in Oxford, which could be for several months.

Ms Schondelmeyer said: "It was Mother Teresa who said we can do no great things in this life, just small things with great love and I think this is a very small thing but there is a lot of love going into it.

"To know how difficult her future would be without these operations and to have a small part in improving that future means a whole lot to me."
