Plans for a £40m face-lift of the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre in Nottingham have been submitted.

Westfield, which owns and runs the centre, wants to enhance the Listergate and Collin Street entrances.

It is hoped work will begin in the summer provided the city council accepts the scheme and existing retailers are committed to the project.

The move comes after a £700m plan to revamp the site was delayed by the owner until the economy improves.

Speaking about the delay to the original £700m plans, Peter Miller, of Westfield, said the firm had been "blindsided by the credit crunch and the economic crisis".

He went on to say the company was fortunate to have "come up with a way to progress in the interim until we can viably take forward our redevelopment plans".

Westfield is also considering breaking up some of the larger shops within the Broadmarsh and has said that new retailers have expressed interest in moving into the shopping centre.
