Olympic double gold medallist Rebecca Adlington has opened a Mansfield pool which has been renamed in her honour.

Mansfield District Council has spent more than £5m on refurbishing Sherwood Baths which has been renamed as the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre.

Adlington, who celebrated her 21st birthday this week trained for many years at the pool.

"Every day I train at one or more council-owned and operated swimming pools in Nottingham," she said.

"To see people of all ages and abilities swimming up and down the pool or splashing around having fun is all the evidence I need to understand the benefits swimming facilities can bring to a community."

She said it was "a massive honour" to see her name on the side of the pool.

Adlington won swimming gold in the 400m and 800m freestyle events in Beijing.
