Anger over street parking permit fee in Mapperley

Residents in part of Nottingham are angry at a council's plan to charge for on-street parking permits - even though a space would not be guaranteed.

People in Mapperley have complained about drivers using the residential areas since Gedling Borough Council introduced fees at nearby car parks.

The county council plans to introduce residents' permits on Woodthorpe Drive and Haywood Road to tackle the problem.

But residents are angry they would be charged £25 a year.

'Free up spaces'

Council officials said the permit plan would free up parking spaces for residents, though spaces could not be guaranteed.

Councillor Richard Jackson said: "There will be as many spaces there as there are at the moment, but you won't have non-residents parking there."

Everal Burrell, who lives on Haywood Road, said: "We have to pay to park outside our house and we are still not guaranteed a space there, which I just find ludicrous."

Gedling Labour MP Vernon Coaker said he was backing residents' complaints.

Residents are being consulted on the plans.
