New arts centre officially opened

The centre hopes to attract 200,000 people in its first year

A new £20m arts centre, which includes a David Hockney exhibition, has officially opened in Nottingham.

Nottingham Contemporary, on the edge of the city's Lace Market, has been under construction since 2005. It will showcase more than 60 Hockney works.

It has been funded by the Arts Council, money from the National Lottery and Nottingham City Council.

The project has run over budget by £4m and its opening has been delayed by a year.

The exterior of the building features a print of an 1847 lace pattern found in a time capsule by architects near the site.

Officials expect the centre will attract 200,000 visitors in its first year.

Architect Adam Caruso, who designed the centre, said: "£20m for a project like this - it's really going to consolidate the already impressive artistic and cultural activities of Nottingham.

"It [£20m] isn't so much."
